چکیده

We present a result of cross-correlating the Infrared Astronomical Satellite Faint Source Catalogue (IRAS FSC) with the spectroscopic catalogues of galaxies in the Fourth Data Release of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the Final Data Release of 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the Second Data Release of 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS). We have identified 324 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) including 190 newly discovered ULIRGs, and 2 hyperluminous infrared galaxies (HLIRGs). Adding these new ULIRGs, we increase the number of known ULIRGs by about 30 per cent. The reliability of the cross-correlation is estimated using the likelihood ratio method. The incompleteness of our sample introduced by the identification procedure in this study is estimated to be about 5 per cent. Our sample covers the redshift range of z=0.037−0.517 with a median redshift of z̄=0.223, which is larger than that (z̄=0.184) of the sample of previously known ULIRGs.

Comparison of dust-to-gas ratios in luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies

The dust-to-gas ratios in three different samples of luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies are calculated by modelling their radio to soft X-ray spectral energy distributions (SED) using composite models which account for the photoionizing radiation from HII regions, starbursts, or AGNs, and for shocks. The models are limited to a set which broadly reproduces the mid-IR f...

First detection of [ CII ] 158 μ m at high redshift : vigorous star formation in the early universe

We report the detection of the P3/2 → P1/2 fine-structure line of C at 157.74 μm in SDSSJ114816.64+525150.3 (hereafter J1148+5251), the most distant known quasar, at z = 6.42, using the IRAM 30-meter telescope. This is the first detection of the [CII] line at high redshift, and also the first detection in a Hyperluminous Infrared Galaxy (LFIR > 10 L⊙). The [CII] line is detected at a significan...

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS Discovery of distant high luminosity infrared galaxies

We have developed a method for selecting the most luminous galaxies detected by IRAS based on their extreme values of R, the ratio of 60μm and B-band luminosity. These objects have optical counterparts that are close to or below the limits of Schmidt surveys. We have tested our method on a 1079 deg region of sky, where we have selected a sample of IRAS sources with 60μm flux densities greater t...

The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue : The photometric accuracy , completeness and contamination of the 2 dFGRS and SDSS - EDR & DR 1 datasets

The Millennium Galaxy Catalogue (MGC) is a deep (µ B,lim = 26 mag arcsec −2), wide field CCD imaging survey, covering 37.5deg 2. The MGC survey region is completely contained within the Two-degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release (SDSS-EDR). We compare the pho-tometry and completeness of the 2dFGRS and the SDSS-EDR with the MGC over the r...

The Galaxy Power Spectrum: Precision Cosmology from Large Scale Structure?

Published galaxy power spectra from the 2dFGRS and SDSS are not in good agreement. We revisit this issue by analyzing both the 2dFGRS and SDSS DR5 catalogues using essentially identical techniques. We confirm that the 2dFGRS exhibits relatively more large scale power than the SDSS, or, equivalently, SDSS has more small scale power. We demonstrate that this difference is due to the r-band select...
